This objective of this project was to link physiological and molecular aspects of diatom silicification in field populations by assessing the transcriptomic response to changes in silicate and nitrate availability. This project was part of the larger "DYE labeling of diatom silica" (DYEatom) cruise from 27 June - 5 July 2013 in the California Current Upwelling System (Bioproject PRJNA528986). The DYEatom cruise focused on diatom bloom dynamics and silicon cycling.
