Chickens act as the host for many foodborne pathogens wherein the pathogen colonizes the GI tract and thereby leading to contamination of the carcass during slaughter and subsequent human infections. In the human gut, the pathogen attaches and invades the intestinal epithelium followed by toxin mediated cytopathy and enteritis. However, foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella and Campylobacter isolates naturally colonizes the poultry gut without effecting their health or production performance. These pathogens were capable of colonizing multiple hosts whilst competing with specialist microbiota in the gut. Comprehensive characterization of zoonotic bacterial isolates could facilitate in better understanding of their pathophysiology and development of effective intervention strategies.

鸡是多种食源性致病菌(foodborne pathogens)的天然宿主,此类致病菌可定植于鸡的胃肠道(gastrointestinal tract, GI tract),进而在屠宰环节污染鸡胴体,最终引发人类感染。此类致病菌侵入人体胃肠道后,会黏附并侵袭肠上皮细胞,随后引发毒素介导的细胞病变与肠炎。不过,诸如沙门氏菌(Salmonella)和弯曲杆菌(Campylobacter)分离株这类食源性致病菌,可自然定植于家禽肠道,且不会对家禽的健康或生产性能造成不良影响。此类致病菌能够定植于多种宿主,同时与肠道内的特异性微生物群展开竞争。对人畜共患细菌分离株(zoonotic bacterial isolates)进行全面表征,有助于更深入地解析其病理生理机制,并开发出有效的干预策略。
