Data Package: Task 4.2 – Interview Transcripts and Notes – Turkey – Discourses
For this task, 14 Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), 15 Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) (with 5-6 participants each), and one validation workshop (with 4 participants) were conducted in Turkey, all in Turkish. KII participants included key informants from NGOs and civil society, media, government, host communities, and returnee groups. FGD participants included stakeholders, women and men returnees and non-migrants. The validation workshop consisted of selected participants from the KIIs and FGDs. All data were transcribed or documented through notes and translated into English. The research aimed to explore the main public discourses and counter-discourses on immigration, emigration, and return in Turkey. It also sought to better understand how such discourses are produced and to explore the lived experiences surrounding them. KIIs focused on the following themes: (1) Introduction and Conceptualisation, (2) Main Public Discourses and Counter-Discourses on Return Migration, (3) Discourses Linked to Policies and Lived Experiences, (4) Recommendations, and (5) Wrap-Up. FGDs were conducted in three different steps: Step 1 focused on Representations on Return and Creators and Disseminators of Representation; Step 2 on Personal Experience of Representations and Representation of Others; finally, Step 3 focused on Imaginaries and Decision-Making, and Aspirations for the Future. The Validation Workshop aimed to present preliminary findings and to validate or identify gaps in the research. The total size of the KII and FGD transcript and notes files (.docx) is approximately 18.3 MB. Anonymized interview transcripts will remain closed for the following reasons: 1) lack of interviewee(s) consent to share data beyond consortium 2) high risk of de-identification due to small size of researched community, 3) high sensitivity of the topics discussed (mostly related to return migration diplomacy and interstate relations).
