The study examines the relationship of insect density relative to their vegetation density in a disturbed grassland setting. Methods:18 different trays of various colours (blue, white, and yellow) were place in groups of 3 with a half meter separation around the grassland area. Of the 6 total groups 3 of them were in areas where there was a high level of vegetation density. while the other 3 were placed in sparse areas of vegetation density. Each of the 18 trays were filled with roughly 60ml of soap+water solution. After roughly 1 and a half hours each of the 6 sites are examined. Record total number of insects observed, and number of species observed. Record data on an Excel spreadsheet Hypothesis: There will be a more insects observed in dense areas of vegetation as opposed to sparse areas of vegetation. Prediction: There will be a higher density of insects in a dense grasslands because of the amount of protection that the flora gives to the insects. Therefore, there will be a positive co-relation between dense vegetation areas and the number of insects observed within a group of pan traps. Metadata: 1)Plots: Six groups of pan traps each containing 3 trays were divided into two areas. Three groups were placed specifically in an area of sparse vegetation density, and three were placed in areas of dense vegetation. 2)Total Number of Insects: The number of insects observed in the pan-traps within each area of the disturbed grassland environment. 3)Total Number of Species: The number of insect species observed within each area of the disturbed grassland environment.
