Spirometra mansoni disease is widely prevalent in East Asia, and endemic in most provinces of China, with the most severe cases in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of Guangdong Province. In recent years, the number of human Spirometra mansoni infection cases in China has shown a year-on-year increasing trend, and the disease has become one of the major parasitic diseases threatening human health. This project was supported by the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Plan, Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation, and Guangdong Provincial Forestry Science and Technology Innovation projects. After 8 years of research, a series of major research achievements were obtained, which were identified as reaching the international advanced level in similar research fields. (1) Systematically conducted epidemiological investigation and comprehensive prevention and control research on Spirometra mansoni disease in common edible snakes and frogs in Guangdong Province. The infection status of Spirometra mansoni in edible snakes and frogs in the province was comprehensively clarified, and it was confirmed that the main route of human Spirometra mansoni infection is consuming raw snakes and frogs. A qualitative analysis was conducted on the public health risk of human Spirometra mansoni infection caused by the consumption of edible snakes and frogs in Guangdong, and the main risk links were identified. (2) Established effective molecular genetic markers for species identification and intraspecific genetic diversity analysis of Spirometra mansoni. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of one Guangdong isolate of Spirometra mansoni was obtained, providing valuable materials for related phylogenetic and population genetic studies of this parasite. An infection model of Spirometra mansoni in Zaocys dhumnades was established, and an ELISA detection method using excretory-secretory (ES) antigens of Spirometra mansoni was developed. Comprehensive prevention and control technologies for Spirometra mansoni disease in humans, snakes and frogs were established, overcoming the urgent technical bottlenecks and key technologies required for the prevention and control of Spirometra mansoni disease in edible snakes and frogs. These technologies provided scientific and technological support for the prevention and control of Spirometra mansoni disease in edible snakes and frogs and human public health management. In addition, Spirometra mansoni disease in wild snakes and frogs was included in the Catalogue of Key Wildlife Diseases and Pathogenic Reservoir Species in Guangdong Province. (3) A total of 12 papers were published, including 5 SCI-indexed papers; 1 monograph was published; and 1 third prize of the 5th Liangxi Excellent Youth Paper Award was awarded.
