Under global warming and environmental changes, the importance of forest-damaging wood-boring beetles (including bark beetles (Scolytinae), ambrosia beetles (Platypodinae), and true powderpost beetles (Bostrichidae), etc.) has relatively increased in recent years. Taiwan has long lacked targeted research on these insects, leading to substantial gaps in knowledge regarding their systematic classification, ecology, and even risk assessment of potential forest damage caused by them. In recent years, the United States has conducted monitoring of bark beetles within its territory and identified over 100 invasive species, as well as several beetle pests that cause tree mortality, particularly ambrosia beetles that carry symbiotic fungi. Several of these species have caused damage to agricultural crops (avocado) and other forest trees. After invading the United States, the camphor and laurel bark beetle native to Asia caused severe losses to the avocado industry in Florida. In California, another invasive species, the polyphagous ambrosia beetle, has damaged California's avocado industry and harmed 335 tree species in Southern California.
This study carried out risk assessments on 15 internationally important wood-boring beetle species. For these internationally significant wood-boring beetles, after conducting risk assessments of both their potential invasion consequences and invasion likelihood, all major forest-damaging bark beetle species from the Americas and Europe were categorized as low-risk pests in Taiwan. Two bark beetle species from Southeast Asia, however, were assessed as high-risk pests in Taiwan. This study also completed morphological identification, distribution surveys, and ecological data collection for 30 species of Taiwanese Scolytinae and 20 species of Taiwanese Platypodinae.
