Samples were collected from yard areas, privies, and a possible garden area at Dunlap
Village, site 36Fa480, in southwest Pennsylvania. This site is an historic miners village dating
to the early 20th century and consisting mainly of two-family house and privy remnants. The
majority of the yard samples were examined for pollen/starches and parasites, although five
yard samples from House Lot 5 also were examined for macrofloral remains. Pollen/starch,
parasite, and macrofloral analyses were conducted on a possible garden sample and 11 privy
samples. In addition, a single control sample was collected from several locations throughout
the site. Yard and garden samples were investigated for evidence of plants growing in these
areas. Pollen and macrofloral analysis of privy samples will provide information concerning
foods eaten by the site occupants. Parasite analysis can provide some insight into the
intestinal health of the miners and their families living in this village.
