A worker wearing a protective mask and a helmet with headlamp stands in the left foreground, to the left of a wooden sewer yard gate. The workman's left hand rests on a boat known as a "sewer skiff" which sits in front of the gate, extending from the left centerground to the right foreground. The "sewer skiff" that was used in 1936 to inspect 6 miles of the City's North Outfall Sewer (NOS). The Assistant Superintendent of Sewer Maintenance, Reuben Brown, personally inspected the NOS using this boat. The boat has pulleys, a battery, and several hoses, and somewhat resembles a rowboat in shape and size. An automobile and a house covered in siding sit in the left background.
