The Mobilization of the European Communities in Chile during the First World War

This chapter examines the mobilization of the French, German, and British communities in Chile in the opening months of the First World War. The work, based on the existing bibliography, newspapers of the period, and unpublished archival records, also analyses these communities’ organization of the Chilean rearguard. The study aims to increase our understanding of the impact of the war in Chile. It argues that a significant proportion of French, German, and British residents in Chile enlisted to fight in Europe, giving a strong positive response to their homelands despite facing different hurdles to travel to the Old World.

本章聚焦第一次世界大战开战初期数月间，智利境内法裔、德裔与英裔社群的动员活动。本研究依托现有参考文献目录、同期报刊及未刊档案史料，同时剖析上述社群对智利后方防务的组织运作。本研究旨在增进学界对这场战争在智利所产生影响的认知。研究指出，智利境内有相当比例的法裔、德裔与英裔居民入伍赴欧参战；尽管面临诸多前往欧洲的出行阻碍，他们仍对母国展现出了强烈的正向响应。
