Probiotics may alter stress sensitivity by modulating the gut-brain axis. The heat-inactivated, enteric-colonizing Lactobacillus gasseri, CP2305 (paraprobiotic CP2305), has been shown to ameliorate psychological stress-related symptoms. This study was designed to reveal the beneficial effects of paraprobiotic CP2305 on top athletes experiencing physical and mental stresses. Forty-nine male university Ekiden runners were randomly assigned to two groups. These athletes consumed a test beverage containing paraprobiotic CP2305 or placebo daily, for 12 weeks. Before and 12 weeks after beverage consumption, the gene expression profiles in peripheral blood leukocytes were assesed by Agilent microarray (SurePrint G3 Human GE 8×60k).
