Biological nitrogen fixation is a key process for agriculture sustainability and it is particularly important in legumes as common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), that represents the most important source of protein for the low-income population of South America, Africa and some Asian countries. Rhizobium leucaenae is one of the rhizobial species capable of nodulating and fixing nitrogen with common bean. It is abundantly found in South America, particularly in the Brazilian Cerrados, and it is particularly important for its high tolerance of environmental stresses. Strain CPAO 29.8 has been isolated from a leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala L.) nodule in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, and it is very effective in fixing nitrogen with both common bean and leucaena. The genomic data of R. leucaenae CPAO 29.8 is important to understand the successful symbiotic performance of the strain under tropical stressing conditions.
