The bacterial and viral communities associated with onion bulb rot

This project aims to elucidate the bacterial and viral communities involved in the disease progression of onion bulb rot during post-harvest storage. By using both 16S rRNA amplicon and shotgun-metagenome sequencing approaches, we were able to characterize the taxonomy and functional potential of bacterial communities associated with bulb soft rot at different storage location in the USA. Additionally, this is the first project to document the viral populations associated with this disease that might be explored as potential biocontrol agents in future studies.

本研究旨在阐明采后贮藏期洋葱球茎腐烂病病害进程中涉及的细菌与病毒群落。本研究采用16S rRNA扩增子测序(16S rRNA amplicon)与鸟枪法宏基因组测序(shotgun-metagenome sequencing)两种技术手段，对美国境内不同贮藏位点下与球茎软腐病相关的细菌群落的分类学组成及功能潜力进行了解析。此外，本研究首次记录了与该病害相关的病毒种群，这类种群有望在未来研究中被开发为潜在的生物防治剂。
