Metaphorical Connections

The Metaphorical Connections dataset is a poetry dataset containing annotations that associate metaphor prompts with short poems. Each poem is paired with an annotation assessing whether it successfully conveyed the core idea of its corresponding metaphor prompt. The dataset comprises 186 poems collected via Amazon Mechanical Turk in March and April 2018, alongside categories determined through human evaluation. Each participating worker was provided with a metaphor prompt and instructed to compose a poem centered on the prompt’s presented theme, employing poetic devices such as rhyme, alliteration, and line breaks. An initial set of 200 poems was collected, but 14 were excluded due to plagiarism. While not all poems are precisely four lines long, we retained and analyzed all non-plagiarized poems included in the dataset.
