Young seedlings of Suaeda salsa and Scirpus planiculmis were planted in leached soil. Three experimental treatments were established: interspecific interaction treatment (mixed cultivation or monoculture), three salinity levels (1, 50, and 100 mmol L⁻¹), and three nitrate levels (0.5, 5, and 10 mmol L⁻¹). The results showed that excessive nitrate application would alter the predictions of the stress gradient hypothesis along the salinity gradient, thereby leading to the collapse of coexistence between the two species in salt marshes.
