EXPLORING THE ROLE OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IN ENGLISH EUPHEMISMS

This article explores the use of figurative language in English euphemisms, focusing on how tropes such as metaphor, metonymy, and synecdoche contribute to the creation and function of euphemistic expressions. Euphemisms often serve to soften the impact of socially sensitive or taboo subjects. Through qualitative analysis of authentic English texts from media, literature, and political discourse, this study identifies common figurative patterns and examines their cultural and communicative roles. The findings suggest that figurative language not only disguises unpleasant realities but also reflects deep-seated cultural norms and values.本文探讨了英语委婉语中修辞语言（figurative language）的运用路径，重点聚焦隐喻（metaphor）、转喻（metonymy）及提喻（synecdoche）等修辞格如何推动委婉表达的构建与功能发挥。委婉语通常用于弱化社会敏感议题或禁忌话题所带来的冲击力。本研究通过对媒体、文学作品及政治话语中的真实英语文本开展定性分析，识别出常见的修辞模式，并探析其在文化与传播维度的作用。研究结果显示，修辞语言不仅能够遮蔽令人不悦的现实境况，更能折射出根深蒂固的文化规范与价值观念。
