Visceral adipose tissue fibrosis is linked to metabolic dysfunction in obesity; however, critical cell types that trigger and contribute to fibrosis in this depot are not completely understood. Whether adipose mesothelial cells (AMCs) play a role in pathologic obesity has been unclear. Overall design: Whole-genome expression profiling was conducted on AMCs isolated from a cohort of patients with varying degrees of metabolic disease undergoing bariatric surgery. Computational analysis of gene expression profiles was used to identify differentially expressed gene and gene signatures.
