Religiosity, Tolerance, and Reform: A 2022 Sociological Survey of Azerbaijani Youth

This sociological research was conducted with financial support from a grant (part 4, No 111) issued by the Agency for State Support of Non-Governmental Organisations of the Republic of Azerbaijan and received by the Public Association 'Centre for Social and Psychological Research'. The research forms part of the project 'Social-psychological rehabilitation of harmful religious views in the youth environment, promotion of religious tolerance and multiculturalism'. The research was conducted through questionnaires in Baku, Ganja, Zagatala and Lankaran cities of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the period from April 13 to May 27, 2022. Using mixed methods (questionnaires and focus groups), 301 participants in Baku, Ganja, Zagatala and Lankaran were interviewed to assess regional differences in religiosity, sectarian affiliation, observance of rituals and attitudes towards religious reforms. The study, which consists of seven thematic sections, offers insights that can be applied by policy makers, educators, and religious institutions. The results highlight the need for balanced religious education, regional policies and strategies to prevent radicalization while maintaining multicultural harmony.
