This longitudinal survey followed three cohorts of school leavers over a ten-year period, looking at the transition from school to work. An initial sample from twelve metropolitan Adelaide public high schools was taken in 1980. The questionnaire used in schools (1980-1983) examined attributional style; perceived social supports and leisure activities. This questionnaire also contained separate sections on psychological measures. Rosenberg's (1965) Self-Esteem Scale; the Nowicki-Strickland Internal-External Control Scale (1974) and Smith's (1973) short measure of achievement motivation were used. After 1984, when all respondents had left school, a number of different scales were incorporated. Respondents were asked to complete the General Health Questionnaire; The Hopelessness Scale of Beck, Weisman, Lester and Trexler (1984) was used; Srole's (1965) scale for measuring anomia (anomie); and the job satisfaction of employed respondents was measured. The 1988 version of the questionnaire also included some questions on general health, some on financial resources as well as some additional scales. Srole's Anomia Scale was used to detect general disaffection; a scale of life satisfaction was also used; and a modified version of the Multi-Dimensional Support Scale used by Neuling and Winefield (1988) measured the frequency and satisfaction with souces of support to the respondent. A shorter questionnaire was administered in the final year of the study (1989). It included the Depressive Affect Scale; the General Health Questionnaire and the final items from the Job Satisfaction and Life Satisfaction scales. Background variables included age, sex, highest level of education, occupation and ethnic origin.
