This votive relief depicting Hades kidnappingPersephone belongs to the Temenos, west from the PropylaiaThe relief depicts two figures, a female and a male one according to the most recent interpretatioris, the scene is one of the most ancient representations of the Rape of Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, who was kidnapped by Hades, the god of the Kingdom of the Dead. And thus taken by him to the underworld to become his spouse, she was obliged to live there for two thirds of the year and allowed to go back to the earth to live with her mother Demeter only for the remaining part of the year.
