Integrative revision of the montane Udea alpinalis group from the Palearctic Region (Insecta: Lepidoptera: Crambidae). Udea alpinalis group revision

DNA Barcode data for the montane Udea austriacalis and U. rhododendronalis indicate deep intraspecific splits, with specimens of both species grouping into several biogeographically separated groups. However, these allopatric splits are not reflected in the results of analyses of the two markers wingless and Elongation factor 1-alpha, except for U. austriacalis samples from the Pyrenees and the French Massif Central. Morphological investigation of the adults adds further evidence to the species status of these biogeographical groups. Accordingly, we remove the taxon Scopula donzelalis Guenée, 1854 from synonymy and reinstate the species as Udea donzelalis (Guenée, 1854) stat. rev., and delimit it from U. austriacalis Herrich-Schäffer, 1851 stat. rev. Furthermore, Udea altaica (Zerny, 1914) stat. n. from the Mongolian central Altai mountains, U. juldusalis (Zerny, 1914) stat. n. from the Tian Shan mountains of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and NW China, and U. plumbalis (Zerny, 1914) stat. n. from the Sayan Mountains of North Mongolia are raised to species level based on diagnostic morphological characters, and lectotypes of all three species are designated. We present evidence of introgression of U. alpinalis into U. uliginosalis at three localities in the Central Alps. A screening for Wolbachia using the markers wsp, gatB and ftsZ went negative for the studied specimens of the U. alpinalis species group.
