Torula kanvae was isolated from the gut of a Copris signatus beetle feeding on organic waste in Pune, Maharashtra, India. Through detailed morphological and phylogenetic analyses, based on sequences of the ITS rDNA region, D1/D2 domain of the 28S rRNA gene (LSU), SSU, tef1, and RPB2 genes, we propose Torula kanvae as a novel species within the genus Torula. Phylogenetically, T. kanvae is positioned near T. auatica. On PDA, the colonies displayed a spreading mycelium with a raised, undulate margin, superficial but slightly effuse, nearly circular in shape. From the top, the colonies appeared dark grey in the center with a moss-green margin, while the underside exhibited a dark brown to black center with a whitish margin.
