The human milk microbiota is a complex biologically active component of human milk, and many factors may influence its composition. Until now, most culture-independent assessments of the diversity of the human milk microbiota have been carried in small cohorts and/or in single geographical locations. In addition, most of the studies performed so far have been restricted to the bacteriome. This study aimed to assess the bacterial and fungal composition of human milk and the potential inter-kingdom interactions in milk samples collected from women living in a wide spectrum of countries, environments and socio-economical settings.
