Research data for "Malice Farm, Peterborough (epb1701) evaluation 2025: Cambridge Archaeological Unit Digital Archive"

Between the 16th September and the 8th October 2025, Cambridge Archaeological Unit undertook a trial trench and test pit evaluation at Malice Farm, Peterborough (centered TF 32831 08436). Trenching revealed evidence for Roman activity, dating to the 2nd-3rd century AD, with a small quantity of roman pottery (including Nene Valley Greyware) recovered during excavation. A number of Post-Medieval drainage and field system ditches were also encountered which is consistent with the overall intensification of the fenland landscape in the 16th–19th century. Test pitting identified a deep deposit sequence, comprising estuarine sedimentation with several possible stabilisations. These stabilisations are variably expressed as: thin oxidized horizons; thin, finely-laminated organic (peaty) silt, or weathering modifications to previously laid down deposits. A possible buried soil was recorded at c.-4.20–4.30m OD and a peat layer, rich in wood remains, occurred at broadly the same elevation. At approximately -3.0mOD a layer of organic silty mud with abundant bivalves was observed in multiple test pits. The digital archive comprises PDF/A copies of the CAU grey literature report and Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI), a selection of site photographs (.tif files), a finalised site plan (.dxf), tabulated specialist data (.csv files), the site context register (.csv), test pit and trench records (.csv), and the finds catalogue (.csv).
