Epigenetic regulation, which mediates changes in gene expression that are not caused by changes in DNA sequence, can create an additional layer of phenotypic diversity on top of genetic diversity. Recent studies have shown that epigenetic mechanisms can be involved in stable inheritance of agronomically important traits in cultivated plants. Cotton fibres are single-celled seed trichomes that grow on the outer integument of the ovule and have been selected for high strength, length, fineness, and uniformity through phenotypic selection in breeding programs. The involvement of epigenetic mechanisms in determining these fibre characteristics was explored by chemical disruption of the epigenome using Zebularine.
表观遗传调控(Epigenetic regulation)能够介导不依赖DNA序列改变的基因表达变化,进而在遗传多样性的基础上增添一层额外的表型多样性。近期研究表明,表观遗传机制(Epigenetic mechanisms)可参与栽培植物中重要农艺性状的稳定遗传。棉花纤维是生长于胚珠外珠被的单细胞种子表皮毛,在育种项目中通过表型选择被选育为具备高强度、长长度、细细度与高均匀度的纤维材料。本研究通过使用扎西他滨(Zebularine)对表观基因组(Epigenome)进行化学扰动,探究了表观遗传机制在决定上述纤维特性中的作用。
