VPRS 17952 Admissions, Discharges, Weekly Census and Placements

The records in this series comprise admissions, discharges, a weekly census and placements of children at Mirallee Reception Centre (VA 5105).The details recorded in the register may include some or all of the following information:child's namedate and place of birthnames and addresses of parentsdate of admissiondate of dischargename and address of person from whom the child was received for admission or to whom the child was discharged.Much of the information is recorded in the pro forma Schedule of Admissions and Discharges of Children Under 16 Years and Claim for Additional Child Endowment pursuant to section 51 of the Commonwealth of Australia Social Services Act. There were changes in the record format over the period; however, the purpose of the record remained constant.The Mildura Reception Centre opened on 20 September 1963. It was officially opened, pursuant to Section 12(a) of the Children's Welfare Act 1958, by the Governor of Victoria on 17 December 1963. The Centre was renamed 'Miralee' in 1967. The Mildura Reception Centre served northern and western Victoria. Children came to the Centre on a Protection Application Order or Safe Custody Order and, if admitted to wardship, assessment of the child was made. The children at Miralee who were made wards of the state remained at the Centre until suitable arrangements were made for their care. In addition to managing the arrival, and accommodation, of children, the Reception Centre social worker supervised foster care, home release placements in the community and provided assistance with applications for family counselling. A Probation and Parole Officer was also located at the Centre. Due to a lack of children's homes and family group homes in the Mildura region, some children remained in residence for many months.

由于Mildura地区缺乏儿童之家及家庭团体之家，部分儿童在中心居住长达数月。
