Assault-related death and homicide in community-dwelling older Australians: a descriptive epidemiological study

This thesis applies a public health approach to improve understanding of homicide among older adults. A systematic review and meta-analysis establishes a pooled estimate for older adult homicide, including a comparison with younger adults, and identifies potentially modifiable factors. The social-ecological model is adapted to describe individual-, interpersonal-, incident- and community-level factors, including older adult family homicide. State-level analyses and a broader national perspective is then synthesized with an evaluation of prevention recommendations from Australian coroners. The research informs practitioners, policy-makers and researchers about the nature and potentially preventable aspects of older adult homicide.
