The most abundant species of the Clavaria fragilis complex in western North America is described as a new species: Clavaria lumbriciformis. It is closely related to the type of the genus but can be differentiated based on spore dimensions, habitat, geographic distribution, and phylogenetic placement. Several much less frequently collected, closely related putative species are discussed.

北美西部分布最为广泛的脆棒瑚菌（Clavaria fragilis）复合群物种被正式描述为一新种：蠕形棒瑚菌（Clavaria lumbriciformis）。该新种与棒瑚菌属（Clavaria）的模式种亲缘关系紧密，但可通过孢子尺寸、生境、地理分布及系统发育定位与后者区分。文中同时讨论了另外数种采集频率极低、亲缘关系相近的推定物种。
