The first letter stands for variable (V) or equal (E) encoding precision. The second letter indicates the observer’s assumption about encoding precision (V: variable; E: equal; A: sample average over locations; S: single value). The third letter stands for the optimal (O) or Max (M) integration rule. The equivalences (⇔) in the VSM and FSM models are explained in the Text S1; the notation |⋅| denotes circular distance.
