This data set presents the results of a reliability and validity tested questionnaire designed to assess pre-race nutrition and exercise-induced gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in runners with no medical conditions or allergies, runners with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and runners with reflux/heartburn. Basic demographics, running experience, medical conditions, voluntary food restrictions pre-racing, pre-race food choices, exercise-induced GI symptoms experienced if they consume a trigger food, reasons for avoiding foods, and sources of information are all evaluated. The data collection occurred in southern Alberta, Canada between 2016-2018. The study received ethical approval from the Mount Royal University Human Research Ethics Board (ethics ID 2016-38). All participants provided written, informed consent.
