This contains the dataset and its accompanying description, for the paper submitted to the journal *Earth and Space Science* titled "How Long Is Too Long? Using Variogram Analysis of AERONET Data to Support Aerosol Validation and Comparative Studies". This study investigates the uncertainty introduced into comparisons of aerosol optical properties—such as comparisons between AERONET ground-based observations, satellite retrievals, or model simulations—by differences in observation timing across datasets. This source of uncertainty has historically been overlooked, yet can be significant in certain cases. According to the journal's policy, supporting information datasets can no longer be archived alongside the paper and must instead be uploaded to a separate repository. I am therefore uploading these data here. This dataset includes a PDF file describing the dataset, followed by two ZIP compressed packages containing data in ASCII format. The total size is approximately 10 MB. These data files enable replication of the analytical results presented in this paper, and allow researchers to estimate the temporal mismatch uncertainty in their own analyses involving AERONET sites.
