池上斷層為逆移兼具左移分量之斷層，1951年臺東地震與2003 年成功地震皆造成斷層沿線部分地區地表破裂現象。由池上斷層的古地震研究結果顯示，過去有多次地震事件造成沉積層錯移，依目前的調查資料而顯示，大多數的地表破裂都沿者同一位置或相近位置的既有斷層面再度活動，形成有極明顯的地形特徵。池上斷層活動斷層地質敏感區位於臺灣東部，北起花蓮縣玉里鎮春日里，南迄臺東縣鹿野鄉瑞隆村，主線全長約67公里，總面積約21平方公里，由北而南依序通過花東縱谷平原中的秀姑巒溪與卑南大溪流域等主要河流之流域。池上斷層活動斷層地質敏感區之位置分布於花蓮縣玉里鎮、富里鄉；臺東縣池上鄉、關山鎮、鹿野鄉等2個縣市，5處行政區之中。

The Chihshang Fault is a thrust fault with left-lateral strike-slip components. Both the 1951 Taitung earthquake and the 2003 Chenggong earthquake triggered surface rupture in some areas along the fault zone. Paleoseismological studies of the Chihshang Fault have identified multiple past seismic events that caused offset of sedimentary layers. Based on current survey data, most surface ruptures occur through reactivation of existing fault planes at the same or adjacent locations, forming distinct topographic features. The geologically sensitive zone associated with the Chihshang active fault is located in eastern Taiwan, starting from Chunri Village, Yuli Township, Hualien County in the north and ending at Ruilong Village, Luye Township, Taitung County in the south. The main trace of the fault zone has a total length of approximately 67 kilometers and covers a total area of about 21 square kilometers. From north to south, the zone passes through the drainage basins of major rivers including the Xiuguluan River and the Beinan River within the Huadong Valley Plain. This geologically sensitive zone is distributed across five administrative districts under two counties: Yuli Township and Fuli Township of Hualien County, as well as Chihshang Township, Guanshan Township and Luye Township of Taitung County.
