The purpose of the survey is to map out the use of and need for proficiency in French after grammar school (the 'gymnasium') among various occupational groups and to examine the relation between these quantities and the formal provisions (concerning syllabus, etc.) for the subject at grammar school level. The material was collected by means of questionnaires sent to a representative sample of Danes holding a General Certificate, A levels ('studentereksamen'), and the material attempts to throw light on the use of and need for French in education, and in people's daily work and spare time, with regard to skill in reading and writing the language and in understanding spoken French. These observations are related to such background variables as classes (the survey comprises classes from 1965, 1972 and 1976), marks in grammar school, branch (i.e. languages or science) in grammar school, sex, age, occupation, and the form and content of the instruction in French
