An open bend of water is pictured in the foreground, supposedly the elbow of the channel that can be seen running up from the left background. Along either side of this channel, masted sailing vessels can be seen docked along the wharf. In contrast to these, a large steam- or tugboat can be seen in profile just in from the right edge.
