[C4OC] Traditional Ecological Knowledge Recording and Management in Torres Strait

The Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) sub-project will enable TSRA to support Torres Strait communities to record and manage data about the cultural and natural values of Torres Strait through the establishment and maintenance of a regional TEK system. The TEK system is a computer database that acts as a knowledge repository, allowing for the capture, storage, management and controlled sharing of TEK. TSRA provides participating island communities with advice, technical support and training to use the TEK system. The TEK system:
? enables communities to protect TEK for future generations;
? allows communities to access information for their own cultural maintenance and development purposes;
? supports sustainable community-based environmental management approaches; and
? allows Indigenous Rangers’ planning and on-ground cultural and natural resource management activities to be informed by Ailan Kastom (Island Custom).
