Humans have domesticated Cannabis for a variety of uses and mediated its dispersal to every continent on Earth. This project provides DNA sequencing data for specimens accessioned in the ISTE herbarium only and is organized under an umbrella project ("Population Dynamics in Cannabaceae") that includes sampling from several institutions around the world. The original herbarium specimens have been annotated with a tissue sample collection code. The original herbarium labels were translated from a variety of languages to English. Tissue samples have been annotated with metadata available from the herbarium specimens, including: collector, collection date, and collection coordinates. Collection coordinates were determined directly when available; most however, were georeferenced from the herbarium specimen collection locality using maps pertinent to the collection date. DNA libraries were prepared using protocols designed specifically for degraded plant tissue. The goals of this project include: inferring the relationships of Cannabis populations in their native range, timing historical human-mediated dispersal events, timing selective sweeps associated with domestication traits, understanding sex-chromosome dynamics during domestication, and establishing a geo-genetic database that can be used to infer the ancestry of genomic tracts in modern, perhaps admixed, Cannabis individuals. These data are being released under the tenants of the Fort Lauderdale Agreement.
