This report presents the results of limited test excavations at the Pine Grove site (12 Mo 183) at Monroe Reservoir, Monroe County, Indiana. The Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Indiana University, in contract with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Reservoirs, undertook these investigations in order to evaluate the archaeological significance of the site and to determine its eligibility for potential nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. A possible Paleo-Indian component occupation, continuing severe erosion and the discovery of four pothunter holes prompted the site investigation.
Fieldwork consisted of hand excavation of trenches to assess the integrity of archaeological deposits and was conducted under supervision of the author from July 30 to October 10, 1986. Dr. Patrick J. Munson was the Principal Investigator.
This report describes the setting of the project area, previous archaeological investigations, the fieldwork methods used in test excavations, findings, and recommendations. The test excavations demonstrated that the Pine Grove site contained relatively sparse amounts of Late Archaic Period artifacts which extended to approximately 0.5 ft. below the plowzone (1.0 ft. below surface). Some subplowzone materials occurred in small clusters suggesting the presence of pit features at this site, but the results of the investigations indicated the site lacks sufficient significance to merit nomination to the National Register.
(Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Indiana University)受印第安纳州自然资源部水库分局委托开展本次调查,旨在评估该遗址的考古价值,并判定其是否具备提名列入《国家史迹名录》(National Register of Historic Places)的资格。
