The Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS)

DEVILS will measure positions and composition of 58,000 galaxies extending back 8billion years into the history of the Universe. Galaxies form through relatively simple and generic processes in the early Universe, but it is what happens to them following their formation (where they live, their interactions with other galaxies, how they form stars) that shapes them into the beautifully diverse structures that we observe today. We will measure all of these processes and how they change as the Universe evolves to build a complete picture of how galaxies develop from the simple systems that first formed into the impressive structures we see in the local Universe, like our own Milky Way.

DEVILS将对回溯至宇宙历史80亿年前的58000个星系的位置与组成开展测量。星系在早期宇宙中通过相对简单且普适的过程形成，而正是其形成后的演化历程——包括它们所处的宿主环境、与其他星系的相互作用以及恒星形成机制——将它们塑造为如今我们观测到的形态各异的精美结构。本项目将对上述所有演化过程及其随宇宙演化的变化进行测量，以此完整勾勒出星系的发展脉络：从最初形成的简单系统，逐步演化为我们在近邻宇宙中观测到的诸如银河系这般宏伟的结构。
