Resident attitudes to urban intensification: Place attachment, community consultation, and cognitive bias

The study explored the role of ‘place’, place attachment, and factors associated with Heuristic Systematic Model (HSM), an attitude theory to explain behavioural influences which potentially shape resident responses to urban intensification proposals. The results show the importance of tangible and intangible aspects of place as part of resident attachment to their neighbourhoods. It identifies the important role that resident satisfaction with consultation plays to increase the likelihood of support for planning proposals. The research highlights the potential for behavioural insights and a psycho-social lens to assist with planning policy implementation as part of enhanced community engagement practices.
