Report on alternative and hybrid business models in cultural heritage - Literature reference

The references listed below represent the final selection from an extensive literature review conducted between July and September 2024 through the platforms Scopus and Web of Science, for the development of the deliverable on cultural business model. Out of 386 articles initially identified, these 30 were chosen based on their relevance to the objectives of SECreTOUR, as most of the search results fell outside the project’s scope of interest. The majority of the articles discuss single case studies. A detailed explanation of the strategy behind the literature review and the design of the final search string can be found in the methodology section of the deliverable available at https://zenodo.org/records/15254190. The selected articles explore alternative business models for cultural heritage sites, with a particular emphasis on tourism as a driver for development. The case studies included cover a wide geographic spread, with a notable concentration on Italian examples. Moreover, the case studies highlight best practices across different sectors, particularly in agriculture and ecotourism, cultural institutions, and the adaptive reuse of cultural buildings.
