The Strathcona Building (Ground Floor) - integrated Project Dossier 2014

The Strathcona Building is a five-storey apartment building constructed in 1927 using state-of-the-art materials and technologies. The building is located in the Sandy Hill region which, at the time, was one of the more affluent regions within Ottawa. Lord Strathcona is a prominent historical figure in the community, where there is also a neighbouring park bearing his name. The Strathcona is recognized by the Ontario Heritage Act. The plaque was mounted on the building but has since gone missing. The Strathcona Building’s heritage value derives from its Neo-Classical and Art Nouveau architectural styles, and its association with important leaders in Canadian history. The Strathcona was built in 1927 and was named after Lord Strathcona, a popular politician and businessman from the days after Confederation. The building was the largest apartment building in Ottawa at the time of construction. With innovative technologies and design features, including a refrigeration system, fireproofing terra cotta wall construction and a roof garden. The Strathcona is representative of the transition to apartment dwelling in Canada, where it held the largest number of dwellings under one roof in Ottawa. The Strathcona Apartments have housed some important leaders in Canadian history including former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and former New Democratic Party Leader Tommy Douglas. The scope of this dossier was to create a record of the ground floor and document the heritage qualities of the Strathcona. This is the Integrated Project Dossier compiled by a group of undergraduate students of the Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Program (Engineers and architects) at Carleton University for the CIVE3207 (ARCN4100) Historic Site Recording and Assessment course in 2014.

斯特拉斯科纳大楼（Strathcona Building）是一栋1927年采用当时顶尖材料与技术建造的五层公寓楼。该建筑坐落于桑迪希尔（Sandy Hill）街区，彼时这里是渥太华较为富庶的区域之一。斯特拉斯科纳勋爵是当地极具影响力的历史人物，社区内还有一座以他命名的毗邻公园。斯特拉斯科纳大楼依据《安大略省遗产法》（Ontario Heritage Act）获得官方遗产认定，曾镶嵌于楼体的纪念牌匾现已遗失。其遗产价值源于新古典主义与新艺术主义的建筑风格，以及与加拿大历史上重要领袖的关联。该楼1927年建成，以加拿大联邦成立后时期的知名政治家与商人斯特拉斯科纳勋爵命名，完工时为渥太华规模最大的公寓建筑。其搭载诸多创新技术与设计特色，包括制冷系统、防火陶土墙体结构与屋顶花园。作为加拿大公寓住宅转型浪潮的代表性项目，它曾是渥太华单栋建筑内容纳住宅单元数量最多的公寓楼。斯特拉斯科纳公寓曾入住多位加拿大历史重要人物，包括前总理约翰·迪芬贝克（John Diefenbaker）与前加拿大新民主党（New Democratic Party）领袖汤米·道格拉斯（Tommy Douglas）。本档案的编制范围为记录大楼首层空间，并梳理斯特拉斯科纳大楼的遗产特质。这份整合项目档案由卡尔顿大学（Carleton University）建筑保护与可持续发展项目（工程师与建筑师方向）的本科生团队，为完成2014年CIVE3207（ARCN4100）《历史遗址记录与评估》课程作业编制完成。
