MODIS Thermal Infrared Sounding (MOTIS) dataset
The MODIS Thermal Infrared Detection Dataset was jointly developed by research institutions including the University of Wisconsin-Madison, aiming to improve the estimation accuracy of tropical cyclone central atmospheric pressure using high-resolution infrared remote sensing data. This dataset contains 3288 observational records spanning from 2002 to 2025, among which 1082 are samples with clear tropical cyclone eyes. The data is sourced from the MODIS sensors aboard the Aqua and Terra satellites, and calibrated by combining ERA5 reanalysis data from ECMWF and multi-source in-situ observations. Generated via the specially developed MOTIS framework, the dataset adopts instrument-specific preprocessing and multiple linear regression methods, with a key focus on optimizing the capture of anomalous warm core features in the centers of intense tropical cyclones. Mainly applied in the fields of meteorology and climate research, this dataset can significantly enhance the accuracy of historical cyclone intensity records, providing critical data support for storm forecasting, risk assessment, and climate change analysis.
