Dinámicas internas de distribuciones espaciales y transformaciones diacrónicas en el patio sur y la cárcel del edificio del Cabildo de Buenos Aires (siglos XVII al XX). Investigación arqueológica en un colector sanitario

This research focused on the archaeological investigation of the cesspit associated with a latrine structure located adjacent to the southern wing of the three arches demolished between 1928 and 1933 in the southern courtyard of the Cabildo of Buenos Aires, Argentina, along the present-day Hipólito Yrigoyen Street. Based on historical evidence, the construction and use of this sanitary feature were initially hypothesized to post-date 1725 and to be associated with the conversion of this sector into a women's prison between 1805 and 1811 (Torre Revello, 1951), which remained in operation until approximately 1878–1880. The archaeological excavation of the cesspit, however, provided new evidence demonstrating that the structure dates to 1783, contemporaneous with the construction of the kitchen located directly above it on the upper floor. This kitchen was specifically designed to support and protect the women responsible for preparing food for the prison population housed within the Cabildo. The findings presented here constitute part of an ongoing research project and represent preliminary results from a broader study currently being prepared for publication. These data contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the architectural development, functional transformations, and everyday practices associated with the Cabildo during the late colonial period.
