we sequenced and assembled only two extant diploid A-genomes G. herbaceum (A1) and G. arboreum (A2) by integrating high-coverage SMRT long-read sequencing, paired-end sequencing and Hi-C technologies. Our initial assembly of G. herbaceum is of high quality to enable both coarse and fine-scale comparative cotton genomic studies. The quality of G. arboreum assembly in this report using high-depth coverage of long reads have significant improvement than all previously released assemblies . Our work makes an important step towards unraveling cotton genome evolution, and provides the valuable genomic resource to facilitate genetic improvement of cotton.
