About Road User Charges Anyone using New Zealand’s roads contributes towards their upkeep. Most road users pay levies in the price of their fuel. Others pay through Road User Charges (RUC). Road users must buy RUC licence to comply with NZ regulation if their vehicle: is over 3500kg gross laden weight, or uses diesel, electricity or another fuel not taxed at source. This includes diesel hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Road User Charges must always be pre-paid for the distance expected for upcoming travel. The revenue collected from road user charges is dedicated to the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF). The NLTF funds new roads, improvements and maintenance, public transport, road safety, and walking and cycling. Users will see aggregate data for the filter columns depending on filters selected using the interactive table interface. Dataset Caveats: This data, including historical values, will change over time as some RUC purchases may be reversed, or refunded in part or in full, at any time after the original transaction. Where a refund is issued, the initial RUC transaction will be amended to reflect the remaining amount post refund. Fully reversed or fully refunded RUC transactions are subsequently excluded from the dataset. Only the initial RUC amount purchased, and amended amounts post partial refunds, are included in this data set. TOTAL_KM_Purchased is calculated as distance purchased for a given licence purchase less any overlapping distance. The dataset is tabulated from 1 January onwards for a period of up to 5 years and is presented in summary form without identification of individual vehicles. Data Quality Statement: This data is accurate for current RUC purchases as at the date of the data set creation.
