Against the backdrop of the accelerating advent of the global electricity era, with rising electrification rates in the industrial, transportation, and building sectors, global electricity demand growth has continued to accelerate. Meanwhile, the most dynamic segments of the global economy—including artificial intelligence, data centers, and ongoing technological innovations—have also driven growth in electricity consumption. Against this context, the International Energy Agency's annual report *Electricity 2026* delivers an in-depth analysis of the latest trends and policy developments underpinning this new era. The report features forecasts of electricity demand, supply, and carbon dioxide emissions for the entire world, all regions, and selected individual countries. Unlike the three-year forecasting horizons of previous editions, this year's outlook has been extended to a five-year span covering 2026 to 2030. As electricity consumption grows, power systems require greater flexibility to safely and cost-effectively integrate an increasingly diverse portfolio of generation resources while adapting to evolving electricity consumption patterns and technologies. This year's report places special focus on these challenges, including dedicated chapters on grid operations and flexibility-related topics, alongside detailed updates on demand response initiatives and the advancement of utility-scale battery storage systems.
