A gridded ocean temperature dataset with complete global ocean coverage is an invaluable resource for understanding climate change and climate variability. The Institute of Atmospheric Physics (iap) has conducted a new objective analysis of historical subsurface ocean temperatures down to 2000 meters depth since 1990 through several innovative steps. The first step involves using an updated set of historical observations that have undergone bias correction (e.g., XBT bias correction using the CH14 scheme recommended by the XBT community). The second step is to incorporate covariance between values at different ocean locations and background information from several climate models, including a comprehensive ocean model. The third step is to extend the influence of each observation to a larger area, recognizing the relative homogeneity of the vast open spaces in the Southern Ocean; these observations are also used to provide finer-scale details. Finally, the new analysis is carefully evaluated using knowledge of recently observed ocean states, and subsampled using the sparse distribution of observations from the more distant past to demonstrate that the method produces unbiased historical reconstructions.
The sea surface wind field dataset is constructed using RSS Version 7 microwave radiometer wind speed data. The input microwave data are processed by Remote Sensing Systems (RSS), funded by the NASA Measurement Program and the NASA Earth Science Physical Oceanography Program. This wind speed product is suitable for climate research because the input data have undergone careful inter-calibration and consistent processing. Each netCDF file contains: 1) Monthly mean wind speeds with a grid size of 360x180xN (where N is the number of months since January 1988, increasing over time); 2) A set of 12-month climatological wind speeds with a grid size of 360x180, where the climatology is the average calculated over the 20-year period from 1988 to 2007; 3) Monthly wind speed anomalies derived by subtracting the above climatology from the monthly means (360x180xN, N being the number of months since January 1988, increasing over time); 4) Wind speed trend maps with a grid size of 360x180, where trends are calculated from January 1, 1988 to the most recent complete calendar year; 5) Time-latitude maps (requiring at least 10% of latitude cells to have valid data) with a grid size of 180xN (N being the number of months since January 1988, increasing over time).
