We hypothesise that surface proteins of S. equi, which can be targeted for vaccine design, play an important role in its ability to cause strangles in horses. Thus, our aim is to identify S. equi genes that are required for the infection of Welsh mountain ponies, greatly increasing our knowledge of this important equine pathogen. Objectives are to infect 15 Welsh mountain ponies with three tagged ISS1 mutant library of S. equi and recover abscess material for sequencing; to identify ISS1 mutants in the challenge inoculum and abscess material recovered from ponies post-challenge; to determine the fitness of individual ISS1 mutants by comparing the population of mutants sequenced pre- and post-challenge.
