We are currently investigating the role that resident microbes play in shaping the fetal microbiome during the latter half of gestation using a naive ovine model (no antibiotic treatment or indwelling devices). This study not only assesses the fetal brain but all other organ systems. Our data strongly suggests that bacteria are vertically transmitted from mom to fetus in utero and that these bacteria form unique niches within the intrauterine compartment. In healthy pregnancies, these bacteria may stimulate fetal immune development prior to birth and give rise to an early gut microbiome.

本研究目前正采用未干预绵羊模型（naive ovine model，未施加抗生素处理或留置装置），探究妊娠中后期常驻微生物在塑造胎儿微生物组（fetal microbiome）过程中所发挥的作用。本研究不仅针对胎儿大脑进行评估，还覆盖了其余所有器官系统。我们的实验数据有力表明，细菌可在子宫内由母体垂直传播至胎儿，且此类细菌会在宫腔区域内形成独特的生态位。在健康妊娠状态下，这类细菌或可在胎儿出生前促进其免疫系统发育，并催生早期肠道微生物组。
