Coccidioides posadasii is a pathogenic fungus that causes coccidioidomycosis in the southwestern United States, Central and South Americas. The exact range of C. posadasii and its role on human and animal infections in Central and South America is undetermined: the disease in these countries is sub-notified to local health departments, and fewer than 1,000 total coccidioidomycosis cases across the region have been reported. The Caribbean region is bordered by the Caribbean Sea, and its surrounding continental landscapes and islands may play an important role in the dispersion of C. posadasii across South America through Southeastern Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and Venezuela. To better define the genetic distribution and population dynamics of C. posadasii in Central and South America, we de novo sequenced the genomes of 6 Coccidioides sp. clinical isolates from Venezuela, 2 from Mexico as well 1 from Texas and 1 from Florida (USA).

波氏球孢子菌（Coccidioides posadasii）是一种致病真菌，可在美国西南部、中美洲及南美洲引发球孢子菌病（coccidioidomycosis）。目前，该菌的确切分布范围，以及其在中美洲和南美洲人畜感染中的作用尚未明确：该地区的球孢子菌病存在漏报情况，整个区域上报的总病例数不足1000例。加勒比海地区以加勒比海为界，其周边的大陆地貌与岛屿可能在波氏球孢子菌经墨西哥东南部、洪都拉斯、危地马拉及委内瑞拉向南美扩散的过程中发挥关键作用。为更清晰地阐明波氏球孢子菌在中美洲及南美洲的遗传分布与种群动态，本研究对6株来自委内瑞拉的球孢子菌属（Coccidioides sp.）临床分离株、2株来自墨西哥的菌株，以及美国得克萨斯州与佛罗里达州各1株菌株进行了从头基因组测序。
