The area between the Miers and Salmon Valleys were mapped in detail and sampled extensively to determine the relationship between basement intrusive and metamorphic rocks. Samples were used to provide a basis for a coherent nomenclature of some of the granitic rocks in the Dry Valley region. Samples were also collected from type areas of granites in the Taylor and Wright Valleys for comparison. Granite-marble contacts were sampled and mapped. Suitable outcrops of skarn were mainly restricted to the ridge crests where the exposures were relatively free of any scree cover. Samples were analysed with a mineralogical study to evaluate the thermal regime of skarn formation. Detailed petrological and microprobe studies were made on the granite-marble samples to determine the parameters (e.g. temperature, CO2 pressure, etc) involved in the formation of skarn and an investigation into the chemical and petrological relationship of the intrusives and specifically between a granite pluton and the enclosing metamorphic rocks was completed.
